SUPPORT SCIENTIST POSITIONS
in mm-wave radio astronomy
(starting date October 2001 or later).
Candidates for this position should have a PhD in astronomy, physics, or mathematics and several years of postdoctoral experience. They should have a strong interest in interferometry, mm-wave research, and image restoration techniques. They should have a good experience in software installation and programming.
The appointed scientist will belong to the IRAM astronomers' group and can spend up to 50% of his/her time on own research. The current research activities at IRAM include the study of line and continuum emission from galaxies (including high redshift objects), of circumstellar disks and envelopes, as well as studies of the structure and chemistry of the interstellar medium, using the IRAM instruments (see their description on the IRAM web site http://iram.fr).
The position is open at the IRAM Headquarters, Grenoble, for an initial period of 3 years and can be extended up to 5 years. Tenure is possible and could be considered earlier in exceptional cases. The salary will depend on experience and family situation. It includes an expatriation premium for non-French citizens.

The successful candidate will spend up to 100 days per year at the Pico Veleta Observatory giving support to visiting astronomers and organizing and performing absentee observations (including quality control). He/she will participate in general support duties such as ensuring the pointing and calibration quality of the telescope, writing documentation, commissioning of new instruments etc. Depending on his/her qualification he/she may participate in developing new software or hardware for the telescope.
Candidates should have a Ph.D. in astronomy and strong observing interests. Ability to work at 2900 meters altitude is required. The working language is English, but the candidate should be willing to learn Spanish. Up to 50% of the working time may be used for personal research.
