I agree fully with your comments.

There's one more point to producing images in the pipeline: archiving.
If data get public after some time, then it will be much more useful if
an astronomer can see an automatically produced map to evaluate the data
quality
rather than having to embark into a full reduction to find out that the
data was useless.
